It’s that time of year again; I’m in NYC for the Strata Data Conference. The theme of this year’s event is "Make Data Work." While the theme will resonate with most, I would tweak it to be "Win with Data," because that is exactly what companies need to do. I often speak with executives and ask them, "What is your data strategy? Is your data working for you?" More often than not, the answer is no. Everyone wants to win with data, but as an industry, we’re struggling with how to do it.
I’ve been in the technology world a long time, and what I’m seeing and hearing about now is a re-platforming and paradigm shift—the likes we haven’t seen in 30 years. It’s definitely a challenge, but it’s also a tremendous opportunity for companies to fundamentally reset or (as many like to say) "digitally transform" their business. It will catapult them forward for decades to come. Those who successfully pull this off will be the winners!
Let me explain. We are facing a data deluge. Data of many types is coming from every possible source, and organizations across the board are finding it incredibly complex and challenging not only to manage the data but also to use it to outperform their competitors. Many companies from industries that include retail, healthcare, automotive, financial services and manufacturing have tried different approaches to solve this problem with limited success. Their data is still siloed, it’s separated, their infrastructure is stitched together and not integrated and they all are struggling to take full advantage of cloud economics. You see, data has become one of the most important assets for companies and organizations today. Once companies recognize that, they can then start putting it to work. The key is to think about your data differently.
At MapR Technologies, we have customers that have reinvented their approach to managing data, and in doing so, they have created an architecture that helps them manage all of their data on one platform, across every cloud. Many of them are well advanced in their digital-transformation journey. Imagine, intelligent automobile systems that analyze live streams of data at upwards of 2 gigabytes per second to make real-time, autonomous driving decisions; retail organizations using data in real time to personalize the consumer experience and then optimize pricing and supply chain operations; and healthcare providers that leverage machine learning with multiple sources of data to deliver personalized patient care. Our customers are thinking about their data differently, creating a data strategy, executing on it and ultimately winning with data!
What I am looking forward to at Strata is getting together with forward-thinking executives and talking with them about new opportunities and new solutions. I am excited to hear about new approaches and innovative ideas people are thinking about. I know that we will learn from each other, and together, we can win with data.
MapR will be exhibiting at Strata this week, and I welcome you to stop by our booth to share your experience with your digital-transformation journey and explore how we can help you achieve limitless possibilities.
