What Are Kubernetes Pods?

A pod is the management unit inside of Kubernetes. A pod is composed of one (typically) or many containers. Each pod has its own IP address. For more information, see Pod.

The bootstrapping process creates the operator pods in the mapr-system namespace. It also creates pods for spark-operator, drill-operator, and the MapR Container Storage Interface (CSI) Storage Plugin Overview in their own namespaces.

If you deploy a CSpace or a compute job, pods for the following containers are created and launched inside the namespace created by the CSpace:
  • CSpace Terminal for running sparkctl and kubectl commands
  • Compute engines such as Drill and Spark
