HttpFS is one of several tools available to interact with the MapR distributed file system. Some differentiating features of HttpFS include:

  • Programmatic Access: By exposing a RESTful API, HttpFS makes it simple for existing tools like curl and wget, as well as scripting languages like Python, Perl, and Javascript to list, read, and store files.
  • Version Independence: HttpFS has no distributed file system version or protocol dependencies, making it ideal for transferring files between different versions or types of distributed file system. Examples include transferring files between multiple versions of HDFS, or from HDFS to MapR-FS.
  • Remote Access: By serving as an HTTP gateway, clients of HttpFS need not have direct access to the nodes in the Hadoop cluster, making it simple to use with firewalls.
