MapR Data Lake Solution Cuts New Customer On-boarding Time by 50%

MapR Data Lake Solution Cuts New Customer On-boarding Time by 50%

MAG45 has consolidated all of its product data into a MapR data lake so they can store and retrieve the semi-structured data from their suppliers and make it available for sourcing in a controlled and fully automated process.

They chose the MapR distribution including Hadoop for its stability, scalability, embedded security, and the ease of integrating new data sources using NFS.

The Business MAG45, based in the Netherlands, is one of the leading industrial integrators in Europe. The integrator provides maintenance and repair services to help customers improve the productivity and efficiency of their production lines. By accessing low volume parts more economically, they can help customers reduce total cost of ownership for their production operations. The company serves the high-tech, medical, pharmaceutical, electronics, and Food & Beverage industries.
The Challenge One of the company’s biggest challenges was being able to manage and access the product data of more than five million products from over 3000 suppliers. The non-standardized product data could not be easily managed in traditional SQL databases so storage and retrieval was challenging and time consuming. Without the current MapR solution, matching customer data to the MAG45 database is a very manual process. This manual process was not scalable given the enormous amount of data It used to take several months for MAG45 to set up a supply chain for a new customer. To set up a new customer, MAG45 had to match up the data from the customer with MAG45’s suppliers. SQL databases only enable data matching if fields are identical. “Since our data and the customers’ data are not standardized our manual method delivered inconsistent results. We managed this in various applications, which proved cumbersome and unstable,” explains Laurent Chavagne, MAG45 Director Business Innovation.
MapR Solution MAG45 hired Amsterdam-based MapR partner Anchormen to help them develop a Cisco-based big data solution. Anchormen recommended MapR optimized for Cisco UCS to consolidate all of MAG45’s data into a Hadoop-based data lake. This enables MAG45 to store and retrieve the semi-structured data from their suppliers and make it available for sourcing in a controlled and fully automated process. MAG45 trusted the Anchormen/MapR/Cisco partnership. They chose the MapR Platform for its stability, scalability, embedded security, and the ease of integrating new data sources using NFS. The solution is based on Cisco UCS and runs on a Cisco Cloud infrastructure. Cisco supported the solution design and implementation.

MAG45 Optimizes Maintenance of Customer Supply Chains on MapR Platform

The MapR data lake solution running on Cisco UCS gives MAG45 a stable foundation to serve their customers more quickly and accurately.

“There is a vast improvement on the implementation of new customer sites. We can reduce the time needed to implement new customer supply chains by 50 percent. And because we have more insight into our own data, we expect to achieve savings in our supply chain and our procurement cost. This will result in improved services and TCO for our customers.”

Benefits Hadoop provides a stable and reliable foundation. Having a stable and reliable infrastructure is critical to MAG45 being able to serve their customers. “Project implementation is core to our growth strategy so we need a stable and reliable Hadoop platform. MapR provides this for us,” he says. “It improves both the speed and the quality of the process.” Accelerates setting up new supply chains. Setting up an integrated maintenance and repair supply chain for a new customer is extremely complex. A big part of the challenge was the time it took to access and match product information. Anchormen created a new workflow automation solution based on the MapR platform. “There is a vast improvement in the implementation of new customer sites. The data lake drastically improves the accuracy and speed of our work. We can reduce the time needed to implement new customer supply chains by 50 percent,” says Chavagne. “And because we have more insight into our own data, we expect to achieve savings in our own supply chain and procurement costs.” Future plans. MAG45 is continuing to add new functionality to their big data platform. The data lake will also serve as a basis for the database that will drive their new ecommerce solution to be implemented this year.
